Moving into college can be so fun! You finally get the freedom to make your own choices and meet new people. I get excited about getting a new room to decorate each year. Last year, as a freshman, I made sure everything I bought was color coordinated and that I had plenty of pictures to remind me of friends and family from home. This really helped make the space somewhere that I wanted to come back to after class each day.
Make it Homey
The key to great dorm decorating is to make your space feel like home. If you’re anything like me and halfway across the country, it can be difficult to adjust at first. But if you add a lot of personalization to your dorm and make it cozy, it will actually make you happy. If you leave the walls bear, it isn’t going to be that inviting to come home to at the end of the day.
Your freshman year you are definitely going to want to have pictures of your family and high school friends. When I first came to college, I missed these people a lot, so it was really nice to have some cute photos of my favorite memories with them on my walls. As your years go on throughout college, you get to add to this collection with all of the great memories you have now made with your new college friends. Even better!
This year after seeing so many ways to create a “gallery wall” on Pinterest, I decided why not do this in my new dorm room? It ended up being a really cool idea. I also thought this would be a bit more sophisticated, since I’m not a freshman anymore after all! Throughout the summer I collected a few pieces of artwork that reminded me of home, as well as a Minnesota cutout shape and made a design for one of my favorite sayings, and then put them all in frames.
Wall Decals & Decorations
This is the second year now that I’ve used my wooden monogram! Before freshman year, I spray painted it turquoise so that it would go with my color scheme and I absolutely love it. New for this year are my cute polka dot wall decals. These are so nice because they really spice up the plain white walls. I actually printed these with my Cricut Maker using a special wall decal paper. They stay on the wall so well, but are also very easy to peel off and leave no mark! Talk about perfect.
I hope you enjoy my dorm decorations and it inspires you to do something fun with your own dorm room! Have fun and don’t forget to be creative!
